Mathematical Processes

Mathematical Processes focuses on problem solving.  Children are encouraged to be active in constructing mathematical meaning, to discover problem solving strategies, to practice a variety of concepts and skills, and to communicate mathematical ideas.

Problem solving

  • Function Machines Students input a number and activate the machine to give the output.  Decide what function was used.

  • Mend the Number Square - Good for primary. The caterpillar pulls 4 numbers off the number grid.  Students must drag them back.

  • Interactive Number Grid Test - Create a grid with missing numbers for students to discover.

  • Number Bond Machine Practice number bonds for 5, 10, and 100.

  • Guess the Number- Set the range to play Guess the Number.

  • Button Beach - Fill in the missing numbers.

  • Give the Dog a Bone Students must find 10 hidden bones on the 100 square in one minute.

  • Magic Letters - Each letter is given a value.  Type in words to see if you can add up to total for that week.

Number and Operations deals with understanding numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems.  It will help students to understand meanings of operations and how they relate to one another.  Students will also be challenged to compute fluently and make reasonable estimates.

Data, Probability and Statistics

Data, Probability and Statistics deals with collecting and organizing data. It also includes selecting appropriate statistical methods to analyze data.
